Q & A: Doug Myers talks intramural sports

EditorsPicks talks sports, careers and a new social networking site for intramural enthusiasts, imleagues.com, with its co-founder, Doug Myers.

Q:  What’s your favorite sport to play?

A: I love kickball- nothing like being able to make a play by pegging someone!

Q: Should students interested in sports join intramural leagues? What are the benefits of being involved?

A: Intramural sports are a great way to meet new people and stay active. I’d definitely recommend that everybody pick at least one of the more obscure intramural sports offered at their college and sign up, preferably as a free agent. This is a great way to expand out of your comfort zone and you’d be surprised just how much fun sports like wallyball and pickleball really are.

Q: Should a person put their intramural experience on a resume?

A: I think generally intramural experience is best used as an answer to an interview question rather than a resume builder. Intramural experience can give you great stories to show your leadership skills, team building strengths, and even your ability to handle adversity and troublesome team members.

Q: What would you say about pursuing work that you naturally enjoy?

A: I think everyone should pursue work that they naturally enjoy! The more you enjoy your job the harder you’ll work at it and you’ll end up not only doing a better job, but having a blast doing it. You’re going to spend at least half of your day at your job so you might as well be having fun while you’re there!

Q: What is imleagues? How does it help college intramural teams?

A: imleagues is a social website based around collegiate intramural sports. We provide intramural directors at colleges and universities a free website to fully manage their intramural sports programs while at the same time giving students a better way to sign up for sports and interact with their teammates. Basically we give intramural directors the tools they need to make their jobs A LOT easier, and give the students a much more fun and interactive experience with intramural sports along the lines of what they are accustomed to with facebook and other social sites.

Q: How many colleges are on the site and does it cost to join?

A: We had around 75 schools using imleagues for the fall semester and we are looking to add about 20 more for the spring. It is a completely free, no commitment, no contract site (something many schools just can’t believe!). Once schools find out about us and use imleagues they are ecstatic with the site. Word of mouth and referrals have been our main method for growing the site. Intramural directors are a close knit community and we’ve found by offering a product that is very useful to them backed by the best support in the industry they are happy to let other intramural directors know just how positive their experience with us has been.
